From the Golf Course to the Classroom

For Brett Rusek, bringing high-level industry experience into the classroom is key to preparing the next generation of turfgrass professionals.

As Director of the Greenkeeper Apprenticeship Program (GAP) at Sandhills Community College (SCC), Brett draws on a career spent working at prestigious, high-profile clubs, including Pinehurst Resort, The Cliffs Communities and Forest Creek Golf Club. Those experiences gave him firsthand insight into the technical expertise, work ethic and leadership required to succeed in the golf course industry.

鈥淢y goal as Director is to bring those real-world experiences into the classroom and provide our students with practical knowledge they can immediately apply at their own golf courses,鈥 Brett said.

That connection between education and professional experience is at the heart of GAP. The program operates through a long-standing partnership between the United States Golf Association (USGA), the SCC Landscape Gardening Program and Sandhills Community College.

Designed to bridge classroom education and professional practice, GAP connects students directly with golf course superintendents, industry mentors and professional organizations while exposing them to emerging technologies and career opportunities.

For Brett, preparing students for the industry goes beyond developing technical skills. He takes pride in helping students build the communication skills, confidence and strong technical foundations they will need as they take on greater responsibilities and pursue careers as assistant superintendents, head superintendents and industry leaders.

Ultimately, our goal is to develop knowledgeable, dependable, and well-rounded individuals who are prepared to take the next step in their careers and make a positive impact on the golf course industry.

By sharing the knowledge and lessons gained throughout his own career, Brett is helping prepare students for theirs. His experience on the golf course now serves a new purpose in the classroom: giving the next generation of turfgrass professionals practical knowledge they can put to work today and a foundation for wherever their careers take them.
